The short version: we read the prices off your receipt, we throw the image away, and we never sell anything that could identify you. The rest of this page is the same thing said carefully.
Who we are
Counter Price is operated by Siddharth Gupta in New South Wales, Australia. For anything on this page, email sunnyday130826@gmail.com.
Our turnover is below the $3 million threshold, so the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) would not apply to us by default. We have chosen not to rely on that. We handle your information in line with the 13 Australian Privacy Principles, and we are applying to opt in under section 6EA of the Act so that those obligations bind us formally.
What we collect
- The receipt you upload. The file is held in memory only for as long as it takes to read the prices off it — a few seconds. It is never written to our database, our disk, or any backup.
- The numbers read off it. Platform, store name, the store’s pickup address, order date, item names and quantities, item prices, fees, discounts and the total. These we keep.
- Your email address — only if you type it in to be told about a store we don’t have counter prices for yet.
- Standard web server logs kept by our host, including IP address, for security and troubleshooting.
What we deliberately do not collect
The instruction we give the reading software is explicit: ignore any name, phone number, delivery address or card digits, and do not include them anywhere in the output. None of those reach our database. The delivery address in particular is never extracted — where a store address is recorded, it is the restaurant’s pickup address, not yours.
Your receipt image may still show your name and address on screen before you upload it. If that bothers you, crop the screenshot first. The comparison only needs the items, prices and fees.
Who else sees it
We use three providers. All three store data outside Australia, which means your information is disclosed overseas within the meaning of Australian Privacy Principle 8.
- Google (Gemini API, United States) — receives the receipt image in order to read the prices. We use the paid tier, under which Google does not use submitted content to train or improve its models.
- Vercel (United States) — runs the website.
- Neon (United States) — stores the numbers described above.
What we do with it
We compare your receipt against in-store counter prices we have collected by hand, and we show you the difference. We also add the price information to a growing dataset about what food delivery platforms charge relative to the counter.
We may publish, license or sell that price dataset. That means aggregate and store-level figures: what a given item costs at the counter versus on a given platform, average markups, fee percentages, how those change over time.
We do not sell, license or share personal information. Not your email address, not your IP address, not anything that identifies you, whether on its own or combined with something else. That is a commitment, not a current practice we might quietly revise — if it ever changes we will ask you first, and a change would not apply to anything you have already sent us.
How long we keep it
Price data is kept indefinitely, because the value of the dataset is the time series. Email addresses are deleted once we have answered you, or after twelve months, whichever comes first. Server logs follow our hosts’ retention, which is a matter of weeks.
Your rights
Email us and you can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. We will respond within 30 days and there is no charge.
Security
Traffic is encrypted in transit. The database requires authentication and is not publicly reachable. The single biggest thing we do for your security is not keeping the receipt image in the first place — there is no store of receipts to breach.
If a breach occurs that is likely to cause you serious harm, we will notify you and the OAIC as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.
Cookies
We do not set tracking or advertising cookies, and there is no analytics script on this site.
Changes
If we change this policy we will change the date at the top. Material changes to how we use information you have already given us will be notified by email where we have one, and will not apply retrospectively.
